Do Video Games Cause Depression?

There have been few studies that specifically look at a link between depression and game playing. Most studies have focused on connections between video games and aggression. The question do video games cause depression? Based on the studies so far it’s probably not.

Video Games and Mental Health Studies

Most research is looking at the connection between aggression and highly violent games. However there was a study where they compared low violence games played for less than 2 hours each day, and high violence games played for more than 2 hours per day. They found depression symptoms increased – keep in mind this study was preadolescents. Once the study had ended there were no indications of long lasting effects.

A study from Beijing Normal University looked at gaming addiction and found that parts of the brain which controls emotions were disrupting parts which control reasoning. The conclusion being the participants were more likely to stay online, which made those with depressive symptoms worsen. So again it doesn’t show gaming causes depression only exacerbates its symptoms.

The short answer is to date no conclusive evidence that has been found that playing video games causes clinical depression. Many people who play games may show signs of depression but not be classified as depressed.

There is however a strong association between the effects playing games for long periods of time daily and depression due to neglecting other aspects of one’s life. Isolating from friends and family, reluctance to socialise, and neglecting romantic partners.

Do video games help with depression?

Some people who suffer from depression say they use game play as a way to distract from their depression. They also sight that they can join non-judgmental communities.

There has been studies that show game play quashes negative emotions so you don’t feel so sad or lonely.

I can’t imagine game play being a good strategy for dealing with depression though but rather seeking out some professional guidance a better alternative.

Are there any good things about video games?

There is a lot to get excited about with video games. A “Pallavicini” study showed the benefits of video games on cognitive and emotional skills particularly on young adults. Evidence showing video games improved things like processing speed, memory, multitasking, mental spatial rotation, and emotional skills.

I don’t think there have been enough studies done yet around ‘do video games cause depression’ to say yes or no. However there it looks like some situations can enhance depression symptoms. Finally if you get the balance right there might be both cognitive and emotional skill benefits from playing games too.
